Preserving Pressed Flower Art in Homes with Humidity or Damp

Ireland’s climate has a magic of its own - lush greenery, misty mornings, and that unmistakable soft light. But let’s be honest: with all that beauty comes a lot of moisture. If you live in a damp or humid home, you might be wondering whether pressed flower art is a good fit for your space, and we get it!

We’re often asked things like: “Will my pressed flowers be okay in a house that gets damp?” or “What if I live near the coast, or in an older home that’s prone to mould?”. The short answer? Yes, but with a little extra care.

Pressed flowers & moisture: what to know

Pressed flowers are delicate by nature — they’ve been dried, flattened, and preserved, so they need a stable environment to stay looking their best. Moisture in the air can potentially cause discolouration or, in rare cases, mildew.

But don’t worry. Most of our customers, even those living in older cottages, coastal towns, or places like Amsterdam (where the question originally came from!), haven’t had issues — especially when they follow these simple steps.

How to protect pressed flower art in humid Irish homes

1. Choose the right spot
Try to hang your piece in a space that stays fairly dry and has decent airflow. Avoid spots like bathrooms, kitchens, or anywhere near radiators or open windows. Think living rooms, bedrooms, or hallways that don’t get too much direct sun or steam.

2. Keep it framed behind glass
At SIÓG, all our artwork is sealed behind high-quality glass, which acts like a protective barrier against moisture and dust. If your home tends to get damp, let us know, we can offer extra-sealed backing to give your piece even more protection.

3. Add a dehumidifier or moisture absorber
Small dehumidifiers, or even simple silica gel sachets (like the ones used in wardrobes and shoe boxes), can help regulate moisture in the air. Pop one discreetly near your frame, especially in the winter months or if your home tends to feel stuffy.

4. Keep an eye on it
It’s a good idea to check in on your piece now and then, especially in the first few months. If you ever notice any fogging inside the glass or early signs of mould (which is very rare), just get in touch and we’ll talk you through what to do next.

Flower art that lasts, even in Irish weather

Yes, living in Ireland (or anywhere with a damp climate) means your flower art might need a little more TLC but it’s absolutely worth it. With a bit of thoughtful placement and the right setup, your pressed flowers will stay beautiful for many years to come.

Whether you’re in a city apartment, a coastal cottage, or a lovely old farmhouse that gets a bit chilly in winter, your flowers can still flourish.
